Youth in Arts & Sankofa Youth Drop-in make Lava Lamps!

Sankofa Youth Drop-in and Youth in Arts worked together to create one of the iconic symbols of the 60's, Lava Lamps! By mixing vegetable oil, water, food color and a tablet of Alka-Seltzer, our youth got to make Lava Lamps! Fantastic job everyone!

Sankofa "Minute to Win It" Game Night!

The Sankofa Youth Drop-In kicked off December with some friendly competition. Teams worked together to complete a series of mini challenges in 60 seconds or less and let’s just say things got a bit loud as teams encouraged each other to complete the task at hand.

Teams started off with the Cookie Face challenge – where they had 60 seconds to move a cookie from their forehead to their mouth using only their facial muscles.

Dusting off the cookie crumbs, teams then had to move 25 Skittles from one plate to another using a straws.

Next it was time to Defy Gravity! Teams had to keep three balloons in the air for one minute, which sounds easy, but trust us when we say it was not!

This was followed by Say Ahhh!, where teams had to stack and balance 10 sugar cubes on a popsicle stick for 3 seconds.

Then came the On the Nose! challenge, where teams had to move 5 cotton balls using only their nose from side of the room to another. Absolutely no hands allowed!

And finally the most challenging challenge of the day, Noodle Pick-up! Holding a spaghetti noodle in their mouth, teams had to try and pick up as many penne noodles as they could in just 60 seconds.

CultureLink Annual General Meeting

CultureLink is a non-profit organisation that serves newcomers and the community through a wide range of programs for youth, seniors, refugees, women groups and more. The youth programs give us an opportunity to get to know new friends, give back to society through volunteering, try our new activities like sports and arts and craft, go on outings and more.

Every year, CultureLink invites the community to join them in celebrating the wonderful work that they do for the community. This day, we joined in the celebration of Cultural Diversity at CultureLink.

A celebration of cultural diversity at CultureLink
We got to help out with the preparation for this exciting event. We helped design the culture murals and put them up on display. We also helped with the decoration and other logistics at the event. It was a fun way to hang out with friends. We also got to enjoy some refreshment of bite-size delights of different cultures.

Scavenger Hunt at Dufferin Grove Farmers Market

Farmers Markets are scattered all over Toronto all seven days of the week during the summer months, and some even run all year round. Farmers markets are a great way to buy our groceries because they tend to sell local, seasonal produce. That means food that has been produced not too far away from Toronto, and also harvested not long ago.

Daryl, Levitt and Eric goofing around.
Dufferin Grove's Farmers Market stands out because not only does it run year round, it also sells mostly organic produce. In addition, genetically modified foods (GMO) are not allowed here, which means whatever you get here at this market is natural and healthy for you.

Jose and Shania learning about mushrooms from a vendor at the market.
On Sep 22, we went to visit the Dufferin Grove Farmers Market and played a game of Scavenger Hunt, where we were challenged to speak with the vendors about the passion around healthy, good food. Through the activity, we got to learn more about what it means for a produce to be labelled organic, gluten-free, and also why sustainable farming is important for our environment.

David, Brandon and Jay getting some selfie shots with the organic honey vendor.

After completing the challenge, we also got the chance to sample some of the lovely offerings at the farmers market. We got to try sheep milk ice-cream, fresh poutine, hand-baked cookies etc. What a treat!

Join us next Thursday at Sankofa Drop-in Program at CultureLink!

CNE Trip and Bye Summer!

On Sep 1, we met up with other newcomer youth from For Youth Initiative for a trip to the Canadian National Exhibition.

What a great time we had at the CNE!
We were given a Scavenger Hunt challenge, where we had to race against time and the other teams to find items at the fair grounds and take photos of them. It was a great way for us to build team work with our group members, problem-solve, get to make friends, and get to know this annual Canadian tradition, that is the CNE.

Eric, Levitt and Isamu trying to win a prize at one of the game stalls.
For some of us, this was our first time at the CNE. For others, it was the first time we got to play a meaningful game with other youth. We had to put our heads together and get creative to complete the tasks.

Eric, Daryl and Roldan strategising their game plan.

Amaniel, David and Brandon striking a pose in front of the rides!
There were so many exciting things to see at the CNE grounds. Performers, crafts made in Canada, farm animals, reptiles, buskers, rides, food trucks and so much more!

Can you believe that's a performer in costume?

We had fun! And we definitely look forward to more interesting activities with CultureLink's Sankofa Drop-In Thursday Program!

Outdoors Volunteer Fair at CultureLink

Priya (left) previous NOW Leader,
with SWIS worker, Barbora
CultureLink hosted its first ever Outdoors Volunteer Fair on Tuesday July 12, 2016 at their program center to assist youth looking for volunteer opportunities to help make Toronto a greener city. The fair was organized by Barbora Gomezova and Lynda Young, SWIS Worker and Youth Program Worker aiming to make youth aware of the positive impacts they can make on the environment by helping to create a more sustainable future for the planet.

Organizations such as Earth Day Canada, The Stop, Not Far From the Tree, SPARK Ontario, Lake Ontario Waterkeeper, LEAF (Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests) and West Neighbourhood House all set up booths representing their specific missions with opportunities to get involved. All of the organizations that participated offered a variety of ways they strive to create positive change for our Earth encouraging volunteers to support an environmental cause that they can relate to.

The fair provided a strong platform to youth and young adults to become associated with various environmental organizations and build their network allowing them to express their passion for environmentally sustainable living.

Pride Parade 2016

CultureLink Youth took part in the 2016 Pride Parade. It was an honour to be a part of the historic celebration of the last day of Toronto's first Pride Month.

Joining in the celebration of being proud of who we are.

CJ all decked out for the parade.

It was doubly meaningful for us to be a part of the parade because the youth at CultureLink believe that it is important to be inclusive and supportive of people from diverse backgrounds, regardless of their sexual orientation and self-identity.

"I joined the pride parade not just out of the need to celebrate my queerness and difference from others but to protest my right to be free of persecution and live my life with free of discrimination and prejudice." - CJ (18 y.o.)

Lynda and Shania hiding from the sun
We were also there to remember the lives that were lost in Orlando, Florida, on June 12, 2016.

It was a one-of-a-kind experience. For many of the youth, a parade like this, to celebrate inclusiveness and diversity is unheard where we come from. Our participation in a celebration like this reaffirms the importance for us to learn to respect others, and stand up against discrimination in its different forms.

Daryl and Amanuel looking cool!

"Participating at the pride was a big deal for me since it was my first time supporting the LGBT community like that in public. I had a lot of fun and felt like for an instant everyone was loving each other without discrimination. I'm personally straight but I'm open minded and I think that love is love without any differences. At this year's Pride, the Prime Minister, the Premiere and the Mayor of Toronto marched along all the people and supported the LGBT community proudly. I suggest you all to participate at the next Pride!" - Amanuel (17 y.o.)

At the Parade, we shared sparkles with the parade-go-ers. Everyone was in a celebratory mood. There were also a lot of high-fiving, cheers, and photos and selfies-taking going around. excitement was highly contagious!

"It was a great experience for me... I enjoyed it!" - Daryl (18 y.o.)
