THE NEWCOMER CLUB 

AT ETOBICOKE COLLEGIATE INSTITUTE

In February, the Sankofa and Youth in Action programs partnered with North York Community House to start an after-school program for newcomer students at Etobicoke Collegiate. The Newcomer Club is run on Thursdays right after school, from 3:30 to 5:30.

During the first sessions, we have done fun icebreakers and team-building exercises for the participants to mingle and get to know each other. We have also agreed on the rules we all commit to following to make sure everyone feels included and respected. Also, we have done some activities that involve reflection and discussions, such as reviewing our 2019 and establishing our goals for the year 2020.

This program serves over 20 newcomer students who enjoy learning different life and leadership skills, as well as playing sports and doing crafts. It is always nice to have a safe and positive space where you feel you belong!

The Youth in Action program made their way to the Humber River to watch the salmon migrate upstream before winter comes!

Youth Programs Join Forces at Archery Circuit

Sankofa, Youth in Action and Youth in Arts programs partnered to participate in a fun filled afternoon at Archery Zone! Not only did we get a good work out, but we practiced team building and group work. We also bonded over the very long transit journey to the space (almost 2 hours!)

Global Roots Youth Orientation

In partnership with The Stop Community Food Centre, this inter-generational urban farming program brings newcomer youth and seniors together to learn and practice gardening, growing food, environmental stewardship and healthy cooking. 

Youth registration will be done on orientation day. Please come to Artscape Wychwood Barns on Monday April 30th from 3:30-5:30pm.

February at Mimico (Youth in Action)

February with the Mimico Girl's Group has been all about learning and living active! The group took part in some funny challenges and made their own obstacle courses. They also created posters celebrating women that inspire them, which we will showcase at the International Women's Day Party! The girls have also prepared (and been practicing) some presentations that they will present to the crowd at the party. 

YOUTH in ACTION @ Mimico (January)

January at the Mimico Library has been an exciting month! Thanks to the Toronto Public Library, we were able to try 3-D printing. Choosing images to create, learning about the printing program, and working with the instructor to print a 3-D toy! 

We have spent the rest of the month creating dance routines, doing DIY activities, and learning some exercises to prepare for a marathon in June!
