Youth in Action: MUDGIRL MARATHON!

The Mimico Multicultural Club went to Dagmar Ski Resort for the MudGirl marathon this weekend. This 5km run included 17 accessible obstacles and all the proceeds went to Breast Cancer Research. The group has been training to equip the girls with an understanding of how to safely prep for any physical event and to keep up these healthy practices all year long. The event itself was empowering for the young women, as it showed them their own power in finishing this difficult marathon and established respect and cooperation within the group and for other runners.

Before the race, we were all looking quite clean... but not for long!

A HUGE thank you to our amazing volunteer Maria (who was one of the first Youth in Action participants and is now a leader and mentor for younger participants) who came up with the idea for this empowerment field trip, created the training plan and motivated the girls throughout the race to complete all obstacles (even those that looked a little difficult) and to pull together as a team to finish!

Mimico Multicultural Club: May Activities

May with the Mimico Multicultural Club has been amazing as we are able to go outside and enjoy the beautiful weather! The group is still training hard for the MudGirl Marathon in June, but they are having lots of fun and staying active in the process!

On one program day, the group made comic strips out of polaroid photos. They came up with a story line as a group and then starred in their own pictoral journey! Below you can see the girls setting up their scenes...

At the end of the day, the group presented their stories to the rest.

On another day, we used the polaroid cameras to take posed 'high-fashion' photos as we did a nature walk.

When days are rainy at Mimico, we make our own fun indoors! On this day, the group choreographed dances to tell personal stories to the rest of the group. Such talented girls!

On another program day, the group headed down to a local festival to enjoy free food (like cotton candy and hand made cookies), activities (pottery painting and face paints) as well as some beautiful performances. In fact, some of the group were actually performing in the festival and we were able to cheer on our team as they sang!

Youth in Action: April Activities with the Mimico Multicultural Club

The Mimico Multicultural Club has spent the month of April training for the MudGirl Marathon that they will be participating in in June. In order to keep the girls moving, we have been doing a lot of active games and fun, physical activities.

We spent one program day inventing obstacle courses. The group had to be creative and create their course, then we all completed it!

Below: our volunteer, Robyn, leading the group through some conditioning that turned into an intense game of tag!

Another day we finally started get nice weather, so, of course, the group went outside! We did some light warm ups and ran some laps around the playground. Then we played an awesome game of capture the flag. Everybody wins when your having so much fun!

April has finally given us nice enough weather to move the program outdoors. On this program day, we did a nature scavenger hunt at the Lakeshore Trail. The group had to be creative and find shapes (curves, teardrops, S-curves, squares, etc.) in the natural landscape.

Of course we had to stop for some photo-ops.

After our long nature walk, the girls relaxed at the playground swings.

MARCH BREAK CAMP!

March Break was a week of fun, new experiences and adventure for a group of 20 girls from multiple CultureLink Youth Programs. The program was geared towards female empowerment, strength of identity and fun fitness activities. We spent two days at the library where the girls took part in interactive workshops (from hiphop and latina dance styles, to international music, to identity). There were also 3 days where the girls went on field trips (SkyZone, R.O.M. and A.G.O.).

The first pictures show the girls having lots of fun on the Identity: Know Yourself Workshop (thank you Asal and Sharon for these enlightening activities).

Next, they all learned a choreographed hiphop dance! Strike a pose!

Such talented ladies, thanks for the lesson Katelyn from #DeucenDip Dance Crew!

The next day, we hit the R.O.M. to explore!

The next day, we had Jim Arnold and his daughter out to give a very informative and lively workshop on musical instruments from around the world. He showed us some musical practices from different cultures and let the girls experiment with many types of instruments and create their own rhythms.

On the final day of the camp, we went to the A.G.O. where the girls took part in several art workshops and explored the galleries.

 What a fantastic week!
