Hanna Caplan, a Newcomer Youth Advisor from YMCA Greater Toronto, came to conduct a
Learn and Lead workshop, where we learnt more about
leadership.
First, we talked about what kind of skills and behaviors leaders have. I suggested things like responsibility, respect, and communication.
And
then, everyone was given a handout with the photo of a leader. There were five
different leaders in total, and each handout had information on the respective
leaders. The one I got was Martin Luther King, who was one of the greatest
speakers of activism. He was an inspirational leader in the African–American
Civil Rights Movement. Other leaders included Malala Yousafzai, a brave
Pakistani school pupil and education activist; Cassie Campbell, a captain and
motivator of the Canadian Ice Hockey Team; Steve Jobs, an entrepreneur,
marketer, and inventor with self-confidence; and Terry Fox, an athlete and
cancer-research activist with great determination, who ran across Canada to
raise money despite having had one leg amputated after being diagnosed with
cancer. Each of these leader displayed valuable traits as a leader in different
ways.
Through this session, I not only learnt more values, assets and
skills of a leader, but I also got to know more people in different roles of
leadership. This definitely inspired me to work on improving my own leadership
skills!
