Nutrition

On February 11, we talked about the different nutrients that we can get from the great variety of food.

First, Lynda handed out a recipe for making Banana Choco Crunch. The ingredients that we need are banana, Semi-sweet or Bittersweet chocolate chips and chopped walnuts. And we needed to do, was peel and cut half banana into bite-size pieces. Next, we added some chocolate chips and 1 tablespoon of chopped nuts. After putting them together, we baked it. the baking made the banana and chocolate taste more yummy.

We learnt that some food is high in fibre content, which is an important component of a healthy balanced diet. We get most of our fibre from plant-based foods, but it's not something the body can absorb. Fibre helps your digestive system to process food and absorb nutrients. Fibre can also help to lower blood cholesterol.Fibre also makes you feel fuller and so helps to control your appetite. It is an important part of a healthy diet.

Vitamins is another important nutrient. They work like hormones. They regulate cell and tissue growth. They are vital nutrients. Each of the vitamins if consumed in amounts less than those required by the body, leads to some kind of deficiency disease. This shows their importance to healthy body.

Proteins are often known as the building blocks of the body. The amino acids that they contain form the structural elements of the body. Proteins are particularly needed during the growth period of my animals. Foods like meat, grains, eggs, and milk are rich in protein.

They won the calendar of FOOD SHARE
Next, we were divided into pairs, and were given the task drawing lunch menu that is nutritious and appetizing. Desmond and I drew a dish of beef, some broccoli and some rice. After everyone finished theirs, we got to explain the different nutrients in the meals that we have drawn. Then, we voted for our favourite one. Finally, Peter and Emma got the highest number of votes. They received a Food Share 2013 Calendar which is filled with healthy and delicious recipes! Congratulations!

It was a very nice session for us to learn more about nutrition. Thanks, Wintegration!
